This module will increase your students’ knowledge and understanding of the subject. The following are some tasks that will be answered in this module:
Assignment Task 1: Understand and explain the key concepts underpinning Mendelian and non-Mendelian genetics of inheritance, and quantitative genetics.
Mendelian genetics of inheritance is the foundation of our understanding of how genes are passed from one generation to the next. Mendel’s experiments with peas led to the discovery that traits are passed down in discrete packets, or genes, which are located on chromosomes.
Quantitative genetics is the branch of genetics that deals with the study of how genetic and environmental factors interact to produce variation in phenotype (or observable characteristics). It also deals with methods for estimating genetic and environmental effects on traits, and the use of these estimates in practical breeding programs.

Assignment Task 2: Discuss basic structure and function of chromosomes and chromatin, gene and genome structure and function; mutation and DNA repair, regulation of gene expression.
Chromosomes and chromatin: Chromosomes are the structural units of DNA. They are made up of chromatin, which is composed of DNA and proteins. The DNA in chromatin is tightly coiled and inaccessible to gene expression machinery. When a cell prepares to divide, it first unwinds the DNA within chromosomes so that the genes can be expressed.
Gene and genome structure and function: Genes are segments of DNA that encode proteins. The genome is the entirety of an organism’s genetic information. It consists of all of an organism’s genes as well as regulatory sequences that control when and how those genes are expressed. Mutations occur when there is a change in the sequence of DNA bases within a gene. If this change is not repaired, it may alter the gene’s function or completely prevent its expression. DNA damage can also affect gene expression, causing mutations. If cells cannot repair damaged DNA in time to divide properly, they die. This may lead to cancerous tumors.
Regulation of gene expression: Genes are turned on (expressed) or off (silenced) through a complex interaction of other molecules. The regulatory regions of a gene include both cis-regulatory elements and trans-acting factors. Transcription factors bind to cis-regulatory elements, initiating the expression of a specific gene. Cis-regulatory elements have other proteins bound to them that control their ability to bind to transcription factors. Transcription factors and cis-regulatory elements work together to regulate the expression of many different genes, in multiple stages that depend on environmental signals.
Mutation and DNA repair: The cell uses a variety of mechanisms to correct mistakes that occur during DNA replication or damage from radiation. Mismatch repair is used for single-base mutations, while double-strand breaks are repaired by recombination. Mismatch repair also causes the cell cycle to pause during G2 when there is a risk of creating aneuploid daughter cells with incorrect chromosome numbers.
DNA replication: Replication is the process in which the two strands of DNA separate and make copies of themselves thus making two identical strands of DNA.
Assignment Task 3: Analyze a population using the Hardy-Weinberg equation and explain the forces of evolution that influence genetic variation.
The Hardy-Weinberg equation is used to calculate the genetic variation in a population. It takes into account the forces of natural selection, genetic drift, and mutation.
Natural selection influences genetic variation by favoring certain genes over others. This can cause a decrease in genetic variation over time. Genetic drift influences genetic variation by chance, causing some genes to be lost over time. And mutation influences genetic variation by introducing new genes into the population.
Assignment Task 4: Describe classical genetics and bioinformatics tools, analyze data generated by these tools, and know how these are applied.
Classical genetics is the study of how genes are inherited from parents to their offspring. This is accomplished by studying the genetic makeup of both parents and their children.
Bioinformatics tools are used to analyze data generated by sequencing machines. These tools help identify which genes are present in a particular genome, and what functions they may have. Bioinformatics tools can also be used to compare different genomes, in order to identify regions of similarity and difference. This information can help us understand how genes evolve over time, and how they contribute to various traits or diseases.
Assignment Task 5: Identify and assess the social, ethical, and economic implications of using genetic technologies.
The social implications of using genetic technologies are vast. There are a number of considerations that need to be taken into account, including privacy, discrimination, and access to information.
Privacy is a big concern when it comes to genetic technologies. With the advent of tests like 23andMe, people are able to obtain information about their genetic makeup without having to go through a doctor. This raises concerns about who has access to this information and what they can do with it. Discrimination is another concern. It’s possible that employers or insurance companies could use someone’s Genetic Information Non-discrimination Act (GINA) would make it illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee on the basis of their genes).
However, there are some loopholes that would enable discrimination, such as looking at someone’s family medical history. There are concerns about the costs of genetic technologies, particularly in terms of who can access them and how much they cost. Finally, there are ethical considerations to take into account when performing genetic testing. This includes making sure patients give informed consent before having their DNA tested for diseases or other medical conditions.
