Kylie is a 28-year-old woman who was admitted informally to the ward following an apparent suicide attempt. She appeared intoxicated and had inflicted significant wounds to both of her forearms which required suturing.
It seems that this deliberate self-harming behaviour is in response to the break-up of her six-week relationship with her partner, Sam. This is her third admission in the past four months. Each of the previous admissions has been following an episode of significant deliberate self-harming behaviour which appears to have been precipitated by a relationship breakup or difficulties with her friends.
She has also moved home to live with her mother as her flatmates felt they could no longer cope with her behaviour. On admission Kylie refuses to have the treatment team contact her mother, stating “she doesn’t care about me”.
